Where to anchor today in Ibiza and Formentera

Arena is a free app, no sign-up, that tells you which of 81 coves in Ibiza and Formentera to anchor in today, going by the forecast wind, sea and crowds.

IbizaFormentera
Where is it blowing from?

Today's forecast is wind from the W, poniente: the coves sheltered from it light up. Pick another wind to compare.

This is shelter from the shape of the coast, not a forecast: a swell can still make a cove roll.

A day on the boat with Arena

  1. Arena screenshot: the best coves for tomorrow at 10, with the wind and sea warning and the arrival time at each

    Before you leave

Arena tells you which cove will be pleasant when you get there: out of the wind, free of swell and in the sun. If you need to take care, it says so plainly before you cast off.

  2. Arena screenshot: a route plan with three stops near Sant Antoni, with wind and current arrows along the route

    Under way

String several coves into one day and you will know when you reach each one, with wind and current already taken into account. The route keeps to the sea with room to spare from the coast and warns you if you cross a ferry line.

  3. Arena screenshot: anchoring in Cala Bassa with the sandy-bottom, clear-of-Posidonia notice

    At anchor

It shows you where to drop anchor on sand for the depth and your boat's length, and warns you if you would land on Posidonia, which is protected. You also see whether the cove has a buoy field and if it is open.

    Lunch, or heading back

Restaurants, beach clubs and hotels you can reach from the boat, with phone and website, and the ports and marinas with their VHF channel and visitor berths for the night.

Whether it is your first time out or your hundredth

If you go out now and then

Arena keeps you company so you can enjoy the day without scares. Before leaving you go through a safety checklist made for your boat and leave your plan, with your return time, with someone ashore. On the water you understand every buoy and beacon you see, know where to anchor without harming the Posidonia and get a warning when the wind or sea call for caution. And if something goes wrong, who to call, the VHF channel and the nearest port of refuge by sea are at hand, even without coverage.

If you know these waters

Arena gives you the data to make your own call, hour by hour and cove by cove: wind and gusts, wind sea and swell, current, shelter by direction, official coastal warnings and the weather at your destination when you arrive. You see how many AIS boats are anchored right now, and each port and marina's details: visitor berths, maximum length and draft, VHF and booking.

How to be listed

Frequently asked questions

Is Arena free?

Yes. Arena is free, with no sign-up and no ads, and places do not pay to be listed.

Does it work without signal?

Yes, once you have opened it with a connection. Arena keeps the forecast for the next 3 days, the chart it uses for sea routes and the emergency card on your phone: the ranking, the route and the emergency numbers work offline. The Posidonia map of an area is kept once you open it with a connection.

How does Arena know how busy a cove will be?

Arena counts the anchored boats in Sentinel satellite images since 2017 and, with the weather forecast, a model estimates how busy each cove will be. It is an estimate, not a live camera.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Arena opens in your phone's browser, with no app store and no sign-up. If you like, add it to your home screen from the browser menu and it opens like an app.
